Adopt Your Stepchild and Make Your Relationship Official
Although you may be married to the child's biological parent, the fact that you're a stepparent may inhibit you from making decisions that are in the child's best interests. Intrafamily adoption makes it possible for you to adopt your stepchild and legally assume all the responsibilities of a full-time parent.
So, if the child's biological parent is not around, you can make decisions regarding medical care, school, religion, and other important life issues. Regardless of whether you're a stepparent, grandparent, great-grandparent, step-grandparent, or relative to the twelfth degree, this process ensures that you have a rightful say in the child's well-being and upbringing.
Intrafamily Adoption Criteria
- You must be related to the child by blood, adoption, or have a relationship with the child through an individual recognized as having parental rights.
- You must be over 18 years of age, or if married, your spouse must be a joint petitioner.
- You must have had legal or physical custody of the child for at least six months prior to filing the petition.
